Amdro® Has a New Look!

26 Feb

If you’ve been to your local hardware store recently, you might have noticed that Amdro® has unveiled new packaging for its pest control products.

Understanding Amdro® Products

Amdro® offers a range of products designed to eliminate pests such as gophers, ticks, and ants.

However, it’s important to choose the right product for the specific pest you’re targeting. For instance, products that claim to kill “fire ants” may not be effective against the Little Fire Ant (LFA).

“Fire Ants” vs. Little Fire Ants

Different ant species are commonly referred to as “Fire Ants” due to their burning stings. Many products are formulated to treat traditional fire ants, which have different biological and colony structures compared to the Little Fire Ants (LFA) found in Hawai‘i. To effectively control LFA, the Hawaii Ant Lab recommends using Amdro® baits containing only one active ingredient, hydramethylnon, a slow-acting stomach poison.

These products include:

  • Amdro@ Fire Ant Bait Kills Fire Ants (now replaced by)
  • Amdro® Fire Ant Killer for Mounds

New Packaging and Restrictions

Amdro® Fire Ant Killer for Mounds is the same product as Amdro® Fire Ant Bait Kills Fire Ants, but with updated packaging and a new name. Additionally, the label now includes a restriction: “Do not exceed four broadcast applications per year.”  For effective LFA control, treatments should be applied every 4-6 weeks for a full year. If you choose Amdro® Fire Ant Killer for Mounds, switch to a different granular bait product after four applications. For a complete list of recommended bait products, refer to “How to Treat Little Fire Ants Around Your Home.”

Products to Avoid

We do not recommend using Amdro® Kills Fire Ants Yard Treatment Bait or its replacement, Amdro® Fire Ant Killer for Lawns, which comes in a black shaker bag. These products contain two active ingredients: methoprene (an insect growth regulator) and hydramethylnon (a toxicant). LFA are not attracted to the methoprene granules, making these products less effective.
