HAL works hard to protect Hawai’i from harmful invasive ants and is looking to fill two temporary Field Assistant positions immediately. Applicants should have excellent communication skills, be organized and be able to operate independently or as part of a team. Prior experience with mapping tools is ideal, but not required. While this is a temporary position, there is a good possibility of extension into an open-ended position with full benefits and opportunities for professional growth.
INVASIVE ANT FIELD ASSISTANT. Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Temporary, FULL-TIME (100% FTE, not to exceed 20 weeks), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) and the Hawai‘i Ant Lab, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment beyond 20 weeks is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
DUTIES: Facilitates in protecting Hawai‘i’s environment from harmful alien species by assisting with implementing measures to prevent the introduction of alien pests into Hawai‘i, with special emphasis on the prevention of establishment and interisland spread of the Little Fire Ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) and the Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta). Drives project or personal vehicles to assist with conducting surveys on invasive ants. Identifies specimens collected as a result of those surveys and samples submitted by the public and other agencies. Assists technical and scientific staff with implementing eradication and mitigation plans. Collects and enters survey and treatment data. Keeps appropriate records of these activities. Assists with extension and research activities including preparation of extension materials (e.g., documents, flyers, and other materials). Carries out basic office administration, data entry, inventory, and equipment/supply maintenance. May require interisland travel for periods of one to three (1-3) nights.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience working in a science related or integrated pest management field.
ABILITIES/KNOW/SKILLS: Basic knowledge of entomology, invasive species issues, or integrated pest management principles. Must have good oral communication skills. Basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to conduct fieldwork in remote locations under adverse conditions for prolonged periods. Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds of equipment on a routine basis, unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Some college coursework in Life Sciences, Entomology, Zoology, Ecology, or related field in the Natural Sciences. Basic knowledge of global positioning systems (GPS). Some experience and knowledge of invasive ant species in Hawai‘i.
